Musical Ecology: The Graphic Scores of Todd Harper Friday, September 17th 2021, 7:00pm Arts on Lafond / Zion Lutheran Church: 1697 Lafond Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104 A concert of the graphic scores of Todd Harper will be performed on Friday, September 17th at Zion Lutheran Church in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul. The graphic scores are both musical and artistic, involving both Todd's written notation and watercolor paintings of the natural world. A special feature of this concert will be pictures of each score projected on a large screen while the pieces are being performed for the audience to enjoy. There will also be a livestream of the performance that will show the scores virtually. "I have worked musically with Todd for over a decade, and I believe this is the culmination of creativity for him" says musical collaborator Aaron Kerr. "I have played trio shows for many years with him and have been amazed at his ability to write a perfectly crafted song. When he started diving in artwork with his scores it gave the musicians an open-ended map to explore. I realized there was something very special going on that everyone needs to know about." The concert features many of Todd's longtime musical partners and local musicians: Paul Cantrell - piano and accordion, Michelle Kinney and Aaron Kerr - cello, Gary Schulte and Laura Harada - violin and viola, and Matty Harris - woodwinds. Todd will add whimsical & reflective spoken word regarding the relationships between the natural world and its humans. Doors will open at 6:30pm, concert at 7:00. Tickets are $10 at the door. Aaron performs with Swallows for their upcoming release, In the Shadow of the Seven Stars, a thematic album based on the murder of Frances Coles by her her supposed killer: Jack the Ripper. From the Swallows web site: "In the Shadow of the Seven Stars takes its name from a public house in London called 'The Crown and Seven Stars,' which was located on Royal Mint Street in the Whitechapel District of London in 1891. The Seven Stars story begins with the murder of a 26-year-old prostitute named Frances Coles on Friday, February 13, 1891 by a killer that many believed to be Jack the Ripper. The band’s fictional story introduces a witness to the murder who is subsequently haunted by Frances’ ghost, who is desperately seeking an accomplice to revenge her murder."
